I think that's a great idea, as long as people don't leave rubbish around and their are enough bins it could work.

ReplyDeleteThis makes it easier because then I don't have to keep leaving the library to eat. And I won't starve either! Makes it alot easier especially during deadline time.

ReplyDeleteI think its a good idea as I like to have a snack or chocolate bar as a treat once I've written a certain amount.The drinks need to be in containers with lids though to prevent spillage and there needs to be enough bins for the rubbish.people should be expected to leave the desk as they would like to find it.i.e. not with loads of wrappers left etc .

ReplyDeleteIt's hard to say whether this will work in the long run.
ReplyDeleteI can spend the whole day in the library and often don't have time to take a break, so it will be nice to have a cup of coffee.
However, I can just see the future LRC being covered in litter, as certain students seem to not know what a bin is.
Is there some way to prevent people from abusing this privilege?
I believe this is really a good idea, but every student has to consider this as his or her own office,feel responsible that LRC belong to all,and don't make mess for whatever reason.

ReplyDeleteYeah it sounds good, but i agree some people need to learn what a bin is, and put lids on thier drinks.
ReplyDeleteMost people do it anyway, it would just make it more open, instead of quickly eating a chocolate bar n getting intergestion.
I think it's a great idea, and isn't it already in place in the ilearn? I wouldnt say that place looks over run with spilt drinks and rubbish. Having said that my only concern would be the rubbish, but with bins everywhere I shouldn't think it would be a problem. Definately think it's a good plan. Sometimes you need a little something to keep you going while you work!

ReplyDeleteYes i think this is a very good idea as long as its rules are respected it will make the library a more communal area, where friends can have a sanwich and save money by bringing their own instead of having to go buy one in the refectory or dolce vita, hel yeah :)

ReplyDeleteA water machine would be good. Food is a terrible idea, there are far too many people yacking and being generally inconsiderate as it is so don't make it worse. If people can't manage a couple of hours without food they should probably seek help, they would also be far more productive if they tootled off to the canteen for a break anyway rather than spending hours on end in the library.

Good idea, but as previous comments have documented, we all need to ensure it is kept spillage free and litter free.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it would work, because although most comments seem to say they don't want rubbish left. There is a shocking number of people that just don't think anything of littering so it would be a complete mess.
ReplyDeleteIts the best idea, you spend forever looking for a computer, 4 hours later you are starving, but cant go out to have lunch cause of the fear of loosing the spot and you cant really leave it on because you get signed out in 10min...

ReplyDeleteI get the feeling that people have not really thought this one through.
Have you seen the state of the computer area in the I-Cafe? Rubbish, Rubbish, Rubbish everywhere. If you let people eat and drink in the LRC, your going to have to have someone on rubbish duty through the day and who's going to volunteer? In my opinion, the LRC staff have enough to do as it is, keeping the LRC ticking over.
Another point to consider is breaks and whether people will take them or not, in turn risking their health and safety.
Plus there are not enough computers to go round as it is and many students will be robbed of the chance to get work done due to the fact that others will hog, adding to the shortage and the problem.
There's a time and a place for everything and I don't think this is one for eating and drinking and hogging computers for the privilege of more time on social network sites.
Great idea, often spend so long in the LRC it will be nice to be ble to have a drink

ReplyDeleteI think it is a great idea. As long as enough bins are put around the LRC then people shouldn't leave thier mess about. When working, it's easy to get thirsty and hungry but you'd have to leave the LRC everytime you want a sip of your drink.

ReplyDeleteIt's about time to be fair. I'm tired of always having to be sneaky about my food and drink. It's especially useful as others have said around deadline time when u dont want to leave your computer or you'll lose it. Also what happens if students start abusing this do we all miss out becuase students just aren't brought up with manners and respect.
ReplyDeletegreat idea especially when spending hours on end doing work, not wanting to leave the computer and risk losing it to go get food. As long as nobody starts leaving rubbish lying around it should work!!

ReplyDeleteI think it would be a good idea, as I always want a snack while I'm working. I spend time in the iLearn and i have never noticed a litter problem. Spillages can happen, but they are accidents and as long as there is someone available to provide materials to clean it up then I don't see what the problem is. If it's really that worrying make it drinks only because you can't expect people to be able to work without a drink to keep their brains active.

ReplyDeleteWater machine-We will investigate this but cost and water supply may be some of the issues...
Bins & Rubbish- We will be getting some more and bigger bins in IT1 and IT2 and we have also put up some signs recently encouraging people to put rubbish in bins.
However, we would appreciate some ideas on how we can get people to throw away their rubbish and also how we could make people more considerate towards others in the LRC??
but can't there at least be a place where there is no eating, drinking or talking whatsoever?
ReplyDeleteI can't see why people have to eat in the LRC when we are surrounded by places to eat! After seeing the state of the Ref after lunch I hope the LRC does not become mess too?
ReplyDeleteI don't like to be around people when theyre eating as it makes me uncomfortable, therefore make them eat in the canteen. Also there would be bits of food in the keyboards and sticky bits on the seats. I for one will not be happy if my washing bill increases because of this ridiculous idea.

No its a great idea, why not have dominoes on standby with pizza deliveries also?

ReplyDeleteThere are plenty of places in and around the university to eat or drink.
ReplyDeleteLeave the LRC as it is, as a no food zone (though some people do eat anyway).
It's currently pleasant to have a study area that is not littered with empty food / drink containers or crumbs left by others individuals.
great idea, people wont litter if you reinforce not littering and provide bins, they would look silly! and plus a lot of people use it at night, so whilst studying that can be useful to hale a little drink or a little chocolate bar, saves time and people will use it more! great shout!

ReplyDeleteBlocking/Banning Facebook-St Mary's is using facebook for teaching purposes and several departments are also using it to promote their services and support students (SU, Careers etc) so that would be on of the main reasons for not banning facebook at St Mary's.
We have removed a couple of comments that contained offensive language and will continue doing so if necessary. Hopefully not..
okay thanks for the response but i strongly doubt they are using it for educational purposes unless cycling through pics of drunk people is on the curriculum....
ReplyDeleteJust a thought... If someone is eating something that leaves their fingers dirty (e.g. Crisps) and continues to work without cleaning their fingers... result; very unpleasant, dirty, unhygienic keyboard and mouse!
ReplyDeleteI think it is an apalling idea, it is pandering to a culture which is unable to set aside a time to eat properly. There is no reason why anybody needs to eat snacks and junk in the LRC only people with a medical problem. The cafe is two minutes away it cleans and disinfects tables which needs to be done after food consumption! JUST SAY NO! Learn self discipline!
ReplyDeleteBad idea. The point is, if people want to eat their lunch in here they will, regardless of the rule. By having the no eating rule at least people are more discreet and therefore alittle cleaner about it. All you're doing by allowing it is making people more obnoxious when they do.
ReplyDeleteJust keep it as not eating, (drinks should be allowed) and maybe this will curb people's tendencies to throw food all over the place and leave rubbish.

if food n drink is allowed in the i-learn and near computers in the dolche vita, then why can't we have them in in lrc? I think it's a good idea!
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly concur with the idea of water-machines, and while it would be nice to be able to have a snack, i can see this going way out of control. Out library is already too informal and this will make it worse for people who are trying to study.
ReplyDeleteYes people eat now but it is not a problem because they have to be discreet about it. I think it will make the library and study rooms a much less efficient place to work, and let us remember that is what we are here to do.
YES!! It is a good idea. As long as we are all responsible and intelligent enough to think if we litter or soil surfaces, it will be to the detriment of others, it will work our fine. The allowance of eating and drinking in other rooms at the uni has been successful, so why shouldn't it be the case in the LRC? Furthermore, the LRC is becoming more informal and this should be seen in a positve way, as it is more encouraging for students to go in and do what we are meant to do: STUDY. So the added comfort of munching on a chocolate bar or having a drink will by all means be beneficial.

ReplyDeleteSurely it is better to have a quiet place to study and read than another "Refectory"? If people want to eat and drink and chat and throw litter about- go somewhere else!
the place looks like a dump (and smells like one too). OK for drinks but food should stay out of library and off the keyboard and mouse
ReplyDeleteI think we should look at old fashioned libraries-no talking and respect was expected and demanded. I thought libraries were for studying it is never quiet and now students have to eat as well. I know i'll go to the chapel that can be the new library.
ReplyDeleteAllowing food and drink encourages students to stay in the computer rooms and hog the computers all day. In the interests of fairness students should be limited to a 2-3 hour computer session per day, which would enable other students (arriving later) the opportunity to get a computer.

ReplyDeletethats a fantastic idea especially as drinks like water promote brain function... on a seperate note STOP FINING ME!!! or at least make it easier on students who live far away at home cause it's a real pain to travel all the way in for those overnight loans...
ReplyDeleteWe are pleased to see that so many of you have commented on this issue. You have brought up lots of important points that we need to consider.
ReplyDeleteThe LRC has unfortunately looked messy in the last weeks due to people leaving lots of rubbish around. It is however, the busiest time of the year.
Sticky and dirty keyboards-We are hoping to provide wipes for the keyboards or hand gel which means that you can at least keep your hands or the keyboard you are using clean.
Fans- It is very hot in IT2. We have asked our Estates department on how we can improve the environment in IT2.
Pizza deliveries-No, no pizza in the LRC. No hot, smelly food.

ReplyDeleteThe use of Facebook is horrific ! Alhtough I am leaving this year, throughout my last year it was forever a struggle to be able to use a computer at uni. This was due to the fact that so many poeple were sat on the computer wasting time on Facebook.
I suggest a ban on Facebook between the hours of 9-5, Monday to Friday. This is so students have the opportunity to use the computers productively. The computers should be used for learning.
